18 teams gathered from across Kent County for the first ever Kent County tournament at Davenport University and Grand Rapids Catholic Central took home the top prize.
Catholic Central placed first with 206 points followed by Rockford (170), Forest Hills Central (167), Byron Center (128.5) and Middleville Thornapple Kellog (128) to round the top 5.
Devin Schroder (119 pounds), Kole Krauss (135), Nate Limmex (140) and Grant Tennihill (215) all took home individual championships for the Cougars.
Nick Guerra (152) and Caleb Childers (171) took home championships for second-place Rockford.
Rockford coach Brian Richardson said that he was proud of his team’s effort.
“We had 12 kids wrestle and all of them won a match,” he said. “11 of them of them placed in the top 8. In my mind, you can’t ask for better than that.”
Forest Hills Central served as the tournament’s organizer and produced one champion, Karmon Foster (145).
Forest Hills Central coach Brad Anderson coach was pleased with his team’s effort, despite falling short.
“I very pleased with individual performances overall. We had some younger wrestlers step up and other guys step into our lineup who weren’t used to it,” he said. “Team wise we fell a little short in the finals
Were just glad to be wrestling right there with those teams (Catholic Central and Rockford)
As a team, we’re not happy with third guys our guys fought to the end nobody quit, I’m very proud of them.”
Richardson said he hopes the new tournament becomes a tradition.
“I just think this is a wonderful way before the holidays to showcase all the great wrestling talent we have in Kent County,” he said.
