Northview Football Week 2 Recap

The Northview Wildcats took to the road this week in their first of two appearances at Grand Rapids’ Houseman Stadium.  The Cats took on the Redhawks from Union with hopes of keeping their momentum rolling.  It took little time for Northview to get on the scoreboard, going seventy yards in just nine plays.  Taylor Roberts capped the drive with a short plunge into the end zone.  The defense responded immediately with key plays from undersized nose guard Joel Wessely and linebacker Brian Killinger.  The offense added two more scores before closing out the first quarter, a keeper by Quarterback Darren Kapustka and a touchdown reception by Kevin Rich.  Offensive production was keyed by an interception return by cornerback Chad Walton who reversed his field in a thrilling return to the end zone that was called back on a penalty.  Long runs by Max Carpenter, who finished with eight carries for eighty yards and a great fourth down reception by Kody Alber on a bootleg pass set up two more touchdown tosses from Kapustka to Rich.  The Wildcats returned to the locker room at halftime up by thirty five points.  Inspired defensive performances were turned in by Tanner Slotsema and Ben Clinkscale.  The offensive line continued to improve with its protection of Kaputska.  The second half might have been without score for Northview, but it was not short on fireworks.  Dan Bolton got a rousing cheer from his team mates as he entered the game in the closing moments of the fourth quarter.  The players seemed more excited to see so many of their team mates play than they were with the lopsided score.  A very late touchdown by Union capped the scoring, and the wildcats took a knee to secure their second victory in as many games.

The Wildcats will travel to the lakeshore this week, as they take on the Mona Shores Sailors in their first appearance on a natural surface with an opportunity to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 1994.  Winless Mona Shores dropped their second straight game to the Greenville Yellowjackets.
